18Blijft er nog tijd over om zelf te rijden?Heel af en toe rij ik nog wel eens met jonge paarden, maar veel tijd blijft er niet over. De job van bondscoach van het jumpingteam slorpt het grootste deel van mijn tijd op, maar als je er zoals ik hartstochtelijk mee bezig bent, vind je dat niet erg. Ik probeer wereld- wijd aanwezig te zijn op de belang- rijkste wedstrijden om alle resultaten kort op te volgen, wat maakt dat ik in sommige periodes weinig thuis ben.Als u terugkijkt naar het begin van uw carrière, wat is er dan veranderd?Alles is veel professioneler geworden. Zowel de faciliteiten om te trainen als de omkadering en de begeleiding van ruiters en paarden bij wedstrijden. Soms misschien niet altijd beter dan vroeger, maar iedereen moet meemet zijn tijd. Veel ruimte om na te denken over of het vroeger beter was, blijft er niet over. In de beginperiode van mijn carrière heerste er wel een meer gemoedelijke sfeer en verliepen contacten vaak wat collegialer. Nu staan er dikwijls grote belangen ophet spel waardoor de concurrentie het toch harder speelt dan vroeger. Door de jaren heen heb ik een uitgebreid netwerk van internationale contacten opgebouwd, dus ik voel me alleszins heel goed in mijn job en in de paarden- wereld.OK, hartelijk bedankt dat u voor Puissance Magazine tijd wou vrijmaken.Heel graag gedaan. You always need to be a stickler with pitbull quality. Equestrian contest, asI said before, can cause quite some frustration. You must learn to cope with it. You also need to love the sport. Only those who are passionately involved can obtain fine results.Is there any time left to still ride for yourself?I rather exceptionally ride young horses, but there is little time left. The job of the national coach of the jumping team takes most of the time, but if your heart and soul are in it, you do not mind at all. I try to be present at most of the impor- tant events worldwide to stay up-to- date. It follows I am absent from home for quite a number of periods.Looking back at the start of your ca- reer, how have things changed? Everything has become much more professional, the training facilities,the support unit and the guidance of horses and riders at the contests. Not everything is an improvement, but one needs to keep up with the evolution. There is no time to reflect on things which may have been better before. When I started, the atmosphere was perhaps a bit more relaxed and con- tacts were somewhat more amicable. Great interests are at stake now, which raises rivalry and competition spirit. However, over the years I have man- aged to build up a network of interna- tional contacts, which makes me feel good in my job and in the equestrian world.Thanks for the time you spent with Puissance Magazine.You’re welcome.
