Internationaal is het wereldkampioenschap in Parijs de belangrijkste wedstrijd, ik mag die dit jaar weer jureren. Een hele eer. Hierna volgen, in orde van belangrijkheid, Aken (All Nations Cup), de Dubai International Horse Show (vier miljoen dollar prijzengeld!), Las Vegas, Abu Dhabi International, Qatar International en het Europese kampioenschap.U zei het al, u bent internationaal jurylid?Ik ben gestart met jureren in 1998 met nationale wed- strijden, maar sedert een zevental jaar jureer ik wereldwijd alle belangrijke wedstrijden. Je hebt er een gedegen paar- denkennis voor nodig, maar een belangrijk aspect is ook integriteit, het jureren is immers een subjectief gegeven. Heel bijzonder voor mij was het toen ik de eerste maal het wereldkampioenschap in Parijs mocht jureren. Je voelt dan zeker een grote druk en er heerst een bijzondere atmosfeer, met de aanwezigheid van de sjeiks en iedereen die dingt naar die begeerde titel... Maar evenzeer ben ik nog steeds onder de indruk van een kleine wedstrijd, om het even waar in de wereld. De cultuur, het landschap, een extreem mooi paard dat je er aantreft kunnen me ontroeren. Ik had het geluk alzo prachtige landen te ontdekken zoals Iran, Pales- tina, Finland, Noorwegen, hartje Brazilië, noem maar op. Stuk voor stuk onvergetelijke belevenissen.Toch is deze discipline vooral in de Golfstaten erg populair?Wel, uiteraard maakt het Arabisch paard deel uit van hun erfgoed. Door omstandigheden echter, in de jaren vijftig met de ontdekking van olie en met de opkomst van deHow have you become a member of the international jury?I began adjudicating in national contests in 1998, but since seven years I have been judging all important international contests worldwide. You need an expert knowledge of the horses, but another important aspect is integrity as adjudica- tion is a subjective process. My first time on the jury in the World Championship in Paris remains a special memory. You can feel the pressure and sense the special atmosphere by the presence of the sheikhs and all other people going for the very much desired title. Nevertheless I am still impressed bya small contest anywhere in the world. Culture, nature and some extremely beautiful horses you encounter can move me intensely. I was a lucky man to be allowed to discover great and exotic countries such as Iran, Palestine, Finland, Nor- way, the heart of Brazil and so forth, each single one being a memorable experience.All the same, this discipline happens to be very popular in the Gulf States?It is logical since the Arab horse is part of their heritage. Con- ditions of life, discovery and winning of oil and the rise of the car put the Arab horse into the well of oblivion in the fifties. The Europeans and the Americans bought all the most beauti- ful horses. They sold them on without realising those horses were part of an age-old cultural heritage. In the nineties of the previous century some Rulers (kings) took a fresh interest in their lost heritage. They gave the Arab horses a new mo- mentum and from then on they did everything to bring back the horses to their root countries. Anyone who wants to be57
