96Jan Tops is een uniek fenomeen in de paardensport. Als springruiter was hij een van de grootste kampioenen metals hoogtepunt Olympisch teamgoudin Barcelona 1992 naast vele andere overwinningen. Als handelaar in paarden en organisator van wedstrijden heeftde inmiddels 54-jarige Nederlander uit Valkenswaard zijns gelijke niet. Hij is de man achter de Longines Global Champions Tour en bouwde een schitterend stadionin zijn geboortestad, het nec plus ultra op dit vlak. En als paardenkenner staat hij eenzaam aan de top. Teveel wierook? Neen, Tops ademt en leeft paarden én is een man met een visie, die hij graag met ons deelt.Het nieuwe stadion dat u voor de Longines Global Champions Tour in Valkenswaard bouwde, is een echte krachtprestatie en absolute topper. Uw grootste professionele realisatie?Het was uiteraard een heel bijzonder moment om bij de tiende verjaardag van de Global Champions Tour de nieuwe Tops International Arena te kunnen inwijden. Het was altijd een persoonlijke ambitie om een locatie van wereldklasse voor de springsport in Valkenswaard te kunnen oprichten. Valkenswaard ligt in het epicentrum van de paardensport in Europa. Het was met groot genoegen dat ik dit stadion bouwde. Ik was echter vooral trots op de reactie van het publiek en van onze gasten die onder de indruk waren van die nieuwe infrastructuur. Ik vond het erg belangrijk dat we verbeterde voorzieningen dan vroeger konden aanbieden die tot de verbeel- ding zouden spreken van onze kijkers en internationale VIP-gasten. In deJan Tops is a unique character in equestrian sport. Asa jumping rider he was one of the greatest champions achieving numerous victories and Olympic Gold with the Dutch team as a climax in Barcelona in 1992. The 54-year- old Dutch horse trader and organiser of events from Valkenswaard is unsurpassed in equestrian events. Heis the man behind the Longines Global Champions Tour and built a magnificent stadium in his hometown, the top state of the art at the moment. He is a horse expert who is head and shoulders above the rest. Too much praise for one man? We do not think so. Tops breathes horses. He is a man with a mission, which he likes to share with us.The new stadium you built for the LonginesGlobal Championstour in Valkenswaard is superband absolutely top of the bill. Is this the greatest realisation in your professional career?It was a very special moment to launch the new Tops Interna- tional Arena at the Longines Global Champions Tour of Valk- enswaard and during the year of our 10th anniversary. It was always a personal ambition to create a truly world class venue for show jumping in Valkenswaard, which is at the epicentre of the sport in Europe. I was especially proud to see the reaction of the public and our guests to the beautiful new structures.It was very important to develop facilities that would enhance the experience for our spectators and international VIP guests. We are very much looking forward to hosting future eques- trian, cultural and entertainment events here. It has always been a very special show in Valkenswaard and a favourite with riders like Ludger Beerbaum, which is always a great compli- ment.Are you planning to build other stadiums for equestrian sports in the (near) future?We always strive to provide the best possible sport and facili- ties and I hope the new venue sets a new standard for our sport. Our goal is always to achieve the best for the sport’s future and that is what I set out to do when I founded the Tour back in 2006. In 2016 we launch Global Champions League and exciting team competitions which will really energise the sport and attract new fans and new TV audiences. It is about safeguarding and growing the future of our sport for the ben- efit of all our fans and stakeholders.
