Karl Reiter: “I’ve always liked to be a horse”Reiter was a trailblazer for wellness in Austria. He had picked up the concept in the USA while travelling after his studies. ‘At the start people often used to laugh at it, but we stuck to it and now our ideas are constantly and shamelessly copied. I’d like to emphasize this success story could only be realized thanks to a host of believers working with us. We started with seven employees, now they have multiplied up to 200.’ Wellness has been one of Reiter’s passions, which was proved when he took over two renowned Steigenberger Hotels in 2004. Both were in a very dire strait in Bad Tatzmannsdorf in Burgenland. Later he also acquired Hotel Allegria, a top family hotel in Stegersbach, in Burgenland too.Despite his success, Karl Reiter has remained his good old self, an uncomplicated Tyrolean, sensitive, with a heart for peo- ple, particularly his employees, who he yearly takes out on a surprise company outing. Rome, the Caribbeans and Las Vegas were among some of the destinations.After coffee Karl Reiter takes us on a reconnaissance tour of the hotel and its surroundings. Karl C. Junior is in charge now of the hotel, which has more than 150 rooms and some luxuri- ous suites in cottage style. Near the hotel there is an exclusive oasis of wellness, which is open during the whole year. It has two very spacious swimming-pools, one outdoor and one indoor, and an Atrium Spa of more than 6,000 m2. If you put all this together, you will find yourself in one of the largest well- ness domains of Europe. Centrally situated in the hotel you will find a deluxe shopping street where you can find all famous brands of perfume, clothes and further accessory articles. ‘An idea that comes from my wife’, Reiter adds.He becomes slightly nostalgic when we enter the rooms forQi Gong, Tai Chi and more Eastern philosophies. ‘This wooden chalet once was the embryo’, Karl says. ‘It was the little home of my grandma, where she set up a bed and breakfast.’ Reiter integrated this charming typical chalet into the heart of the hotel. It is a brilliant homage to his grandmother.Lippizaner horsesAfter a cool beer at the giant counter of the bar, we embark in his jeep on a tour around Achenkirch. We go to see his other great love, horses. In 1983 another kid’s dream wish was fulfilled: Reiter was able to buy his first five Lippizaner horses of the world famous equestrian Viennese and Spanish court school. ‘I’ve always liked to be a horse’, he tells me withhotel waar dan ook tussen Tokio en Los Angeles kunnen worden. We hebben dan 18 miljoen schilling (ca. 1,4 miljoen euro) geïnvesteerd en 44 nieuwe kamers gebouwd, zodat we in totaal aan 136 bedden kwamen. We hadden die winter 206 gasten. Lang niet eenvoudig dus. Mijn echtgenote deed naast de receptie ook verkoop van schnaps, Strohrum en prentbriefkaarten om wat extra geld te verdienen en dagelijks kregen we tot 30 autocars voor een maaltijd op bezoek in het hoogseizoen. Hard werken, maar zo konden we in 1982 een nieuwe stap voorwaarts zetten met de bouw van nog eens 54 kamers en de aanvang van wat men nu zo mooi ‘wellness’ noemt.’ Reiter was trouwens een pionier op het vlak van wellness in Oostenrijk. Hij had er de mosterd voor gehaald inde Verenigde Staten tijdens zijn omzwervingen na zijn studies. ‘Bij aanvang werden we er vaak voor uitgelachen, maar we hebben doorgezet en nu worden onze ideeën nog vaak klakkeloos gekopieerd. Ik wil hier zeker ook bena- drukken dat het succesverhaal slechts mogelijk was dankzij de vele medewerkers van weleer die samen met ons hebben doorgezet en in dit verhaal geloofden. We zijn eertijds met zeven medewerkers gestart, nu zijn het er 200.’Dat wellness een van zijn passies was, bleek toen hij in 2004 twee gerenommeerde Steigenberger Hotels overnam die het bijzonder moeilijk hadden om overeind te blijven in Bad Tatzmannsdorf in Burgenland. Later kwam er nog Hotel Allegria in Stegersbach, ook Burgenland, bij als een top familiehotel.Ondanks dit alles bleef Karl Reiter steeds zichzelf, een ongecompliceerde Tiroler met het hart op de juiste plaats.139
