We have the latest medical equipment at our disposal: an MRI scanner to examine the legs while the horse remains standing. There is a CT scanner to examine head, neck or knees. We can choose whether we lower the horse under ground level to scan the head or to anaesthesize the animal completely in order to lay it on a special theatre. In this way we can treat even the most agitated horses. At Equitom we also command a bone scanner especially designed for horses.You have the best equipment at your disposal, but I hear you have also ‘invented’ operations?As a kid I already knew I wanted to be a veterinary surgeon for horses. It is really my passion and I continue trying to break new grounds. I was the first surgeon in the world to removea kidney from a standing horse. Putting a net in the inguinal region to prevent a groin rupture is an operation which I have developed. A frequent colic with horses is caused when an in- testinal canal is wrapped around the spleen. I can close off the space above the spleen by a keyhole surgery so as to prevent colics to develop.You are also busy developing products?Apart from new operations I have been developing several tools. We also noticed horses need good post-treatment or post-operative products. For example, I have developed Arti- Sport, a natural supplement, which is quite efficient against arthrosis with horses. Its results were so powerful humans began to take it as a ‘rough remedy’ as well. I finetuned it to Arti-Forte in co-operation with Global Medics. I suffer from arthrosis too being stooped to operate for long stretches of time, so I know how efficient the medicine is. (laughs). In the mean time we have developed a whole range of natural sup- plements together with Global Medics.Nature is also dear to your heart.I believe nature has a solution in store for all problems. The only itch is you sometimes need to look for its solution very carefully. Nature is one of reasons why I settled down here as well. The green domain of 13 hectares around the hospitalU bent ook veel bezig met productontwikkeling?Naast die operaties heb ik ook al verschillende instrumenten ontwikkeld om beter mee te kunnen werken. En op een be- paald moment ontdekten we de nood aan goede producten voor de nabehandeling van een paard na een ingreep. Zo heb ik Arti-Sport, een natuurlijk supplement, ontwikkeld dat heel goed hielp tegen artrose bij paarden. Het werkte zelfs zo goed dat mensen dat paardenmiddel begonnen inte nemen. Dan heb ik dat, in samenwerking met Global Medics, verfijnd naar Arti-Forte. Zelf heb ik ook artrose in de nek van steeds voorovergebogen te staan tijdens opera- ties, dus ik weet dat het product goed werkt. (lacht) Samen met Global Medics brachten we intussen een heel gamma van supplementen op de markt. Geen medicijnen, maar natuurlijke middelen.De natuur ligt u ook na aan het hart.Ik geloof dat de natuur een oplossing biedt voor alle pro- blemen, alleen moet je soms goed zoeken. Daarom koos ik er ook bewust voor om me hier in de natuur te vestigen. Het groene domein van 13ha rond de kliniek straalt rust uit. En het zorgt ervoor dat wie hier komt als het ware een vakan- tiegevoel heeft. Dat vind ik heel belangrijk, dat iedereen zich goed voelt: klanten, medewerkers, de paarden,...U hecht ook veel belang aan ‘duurzaamheid’.De gebouwen en eigenlijk het volledige domein weerspie- gelen mijn karakter, dus koos ik voor duurzame materialen. Ik wil ook steeds dat alles tot in de puntjes proper en in orde is. Zo sorteren we verregaand alle afval. De paarden- mest en het stro uit de stallen verbranden we en met die warmte verwarmen we het volledige complex. Zo heerst er een heel jaar door een aangename temperatuur, zonder dat we fossiele brandstoffen gebruiken.
